There are twenty-three consonants in Esperanto:
B, C,
, D, F, G,
, H,
, J,
,
K, L, M, N, P, R, S,
, T,
, V, Z
For most of these, the sounds are identical to the corresponding English letters. The following exceptions should be noted:
- C
- the ts sound in tsar
-
- the ch sound in church
- G
- always hard, as in gift
-
- like the soft dg in budget
-
- the ch sound in loch. This sound is very rare.
- J
- like y, as in Johann
-
- the s in pleasure or the g in massage.
- R
- a trilled r sound as spoken in Italian.
- S
- always "unvoiced" as in pass (never like z; watch out for "-ism" words!)
-
- the sh sound in ship
-
- like w, forms diphthongs with vowels
