Alphabet: The Consonants

There are twenty-three consonants in Esperanto: B, C, Cx, D, F, G, Gx, H, Hx, J, Jx, K, L, M, N, P, R, S, Sx, T, Ux, V, Z For most of these, the sounds are identical to the corresponding English letters. The following exceptions should be noted:
C
the ts sound in tsar
Cx
the ch sound in church
G
always hard, as in gift
Gx
like the soft dg in budget
Hx
the ch sound in loch. This sound is very rare.
J
like y, as in Johann
Jx
the s in pleasure or the g in massage.
R
a trilled r sound as spoken in Italian.
S
always "unvoiced" as in pass (never like z; watch out for "-ism" words!)
Sx
the sh sound in ship
Ux
like w, forms diphthongs with vowels (see further on)
