Unua Leciono: La alfabeto

Lesson One: The Alphabet

The Esperanto alphabet consists of twenty-eight letters. Twenty-two of these are the familiar English alphabet (without the letters Q, W, X and Y). The other six are accented letters: Cx, Gx, Hx, Jx, Sx and Ux. Because these accented characters are not (yet?) available in all fonts, we represent them as 'cx', 'gx', 'hx', 'jx', 'sx' and 'ux' in this course.

Unlike English, whose spelling is irregular and unpredictable, Esperanto uses its alphabet consistently. Each letter always represents the same sound, and each sound in the language is represented by a single letter. When you hear a word in Esperanto, you know immediately how to spell it; when you see a written word in Esperanto, you can pronounce it confidently. In general, the sounds in Esperanto are easily distinguished, with none of the subtle vowel shadings of English and other languages.
